Brette Henderson at Google Headquarters in Mountain View, California

Being a
Chi Omega National Consultant was a Priceless Career Opportunity

—by Brette Henderson Mu/U of California–Berkeley

My two years of traveling as a national consultant for Chi Omega made me profoundly aware of the professional environment that best suits my skills. Directly out of college, I was given an opportunity with the Fraternity that required a tremendous amount of independence, motivation, and resilience. While the work was not always easy, it was extraordinarily rewarding. I found that I flourish in an environment where I can communicate and present, empower groups of people, and pursue creative approaches. I further realized that not only do I thrive in these types of situations, but I also enjoy them.

The Google culture radiates creativity and innovation. As a result, the company attracts individuals with a similar mindset and employs those who are willing to contribute to the ever evolving field of technology. While contributions vary respective to the teams at Google, it is overwhelmingly evident that employees love to work there. And I am no exception. Through invaluable leadership opportunities, Chi Omega enabled me to find a job I enjoy.

I work today on the Global Ad Operations Team at Google. We provide support to advertisers using the Google AdWords product for their online marketing. As an account strategist, I use the consultating skills honed as a Chi Omega national consultant to help business owners develop and improve their advertising performance. I speak directly to advertisers of all ages who have varying levels of understanding and expertise. My work with collegiate members, advisors, and campus professionals helped make the transition into this new position fluid and gratifying. Chi Omega taught me the importance of patience, tone of voice, and confidence when communicating with others.

In addition to fulfilling core responsibilities at Google, we are encouraged to help drive innovation on our team and participate in a variety of cultural opportunities. Chi Omega experiences rooted me in life balance. Due to this practice in college and traveling as a national consultant, I am able to comfortably embrace all that is available to me at Google.

Ultimately, Chi Omega taught me to work earnestly, speak kindly, and act sincerely in all professional interactions. With this mindset, I’ve been able to thoughtfully choose a career path that both suits and fulfills me. For me, serving Chi Omega as a national consultant was priceless.
