The Princess and the Peanut: A Royally Allergic Tale

Nearly six million children in the U.S. have food allergies, according to a recent study published in the journal Pediatrics, and peanut allergies are the most common. In this new picture book, author Sue Ganz-Schmitt, Gamma Delta/San Diego State U, helps kids ages 4–9 learn about food allergies through a fairytale classic with an allergic twist. The richly colored and elaborately detailed illustrations help make this a story that kids will reach for again and again. The book includes a question-and-answer section on food allergies for parents and caregivers and a kid-friendly glossary.

Sue was inspired to write The Princess and the Peanut, (www.royallyallergic.com), because her daughter’s friend had life-threatening peanut allergies. “When a child faces a medical challenge, whether it is a chronic illness, a disability, or a severe allergy, it can be terribly frightening for that child,” she says. “I wrote The Princess and the Peanut to help children with food allergies understand that they are not alone, and that their lives do not have to be defined by their allergic conditions.”

Also the author of Even Superheroes Get Diabetes, Sue’s mission is to help children and families worldwide, and to address kids’ serious medical problems with lighthearted yet informative stories. She co-founded an AIDS orphanage in Haiti, has traveled to China to help medically challenged orphans, and has set up a birthing clinic in rural India. A Los Angeles resident, Sue also produces children’s musical theater.
