On-Air and On Her Way, Aly Jacobs Achieves Success at Dream Job

It’s hard to imagine that anyone’s dream job would necessitate waking up at 3:20 in the wee hours of the morning and being in the office an hour later. But when the job includes meeting celebrities and being part of one of the most popular morning radio shows in Washington, D.C., it’s easy to look past the early mornings.

Aly Jacobs landed her dream job at MIX 107.3 after interning for other D.C.-area radio stations. At MIX, Aly was a promotions intern until the host of the “Jack Diamond Morning Show” asked her to come on the air.

“Jack asked, ‘Hey, can you come on the air and say five things you shouldn’t do on a first date,’” she said. “I had never done anything like that before but I did it, and the next day he asked me to do something else.” After that, Aly regularly sat in on the show as the ‘traffic girl’ and an on-air personality, talking about celebrities and fashion. “It’s a rare story, and I know I’m very lucky,” she said.

It’s not all about meeting celebrities, though. For Aly, who also writes Fashion Fix for the station’s blog, it’s also about the impact she can make in the community. She’s been able to help raise money for the Children’s National Medical Center, and she volunteers at the Washington Humane Society.

“My job,” she says, “has given me the opportunity to host some unique events, from doggie happy hours to benefit the Montgomery County Humane Society, to fashion shows with designers like Christian Siriano to raise breast cancer awareness.

“And it always amazes me that without fail, at every event, at least one Chi Omega Sister shows up to support me and the cause. In fact, I just represented my radio station in a half marathon and not only did my Sister Julianna Acos wake up at 7 a.m. to attend but she ran with me, too! When I felt like giving up before the end of the course, I said to Julianna, ‘run ahead of me.’ She grabbed me and said, ‘no, we are crossing the finish line together.’”

Aly also loves the chance to interact with listeners and hopes that she helps them by sharing a bit of her personal life. “I went through a bad breakup publicly on the air,” she said. “I took listeners with me on that journey and so many of them related to what I was going through.”

A native of Connecticut, “where the only thing I can see from the porch is a huge field with a big red barn,” Aly calls herself a city girl at heart and loves living in the nation’s capital.

She does miss her family, however. “If we only lived closer! I talk to everyone in my family at least twice a day, no joke.”

Aly says that recent graduates should know that getting their dream job doesn’t just happen in a day. “I did lot of busy work and a lot of spreadsheets, databasing, and calling,” she says. “It does happen if you put as much effort into your spreadsheet as you would interviewing Ashton Kutcher on the red carpet. You need to put 100 percent into everything, but don’t take yourself too seriously.”

This Sister realizes and is thankful for her good fortune. “Not only do I feel so lucky to do a job that I love, but I have my Sisters . . . my family . . . on this journey with me.”

Aly is an initiate of Eta Lambda Chapter at American U, where she majored in journalism and Spanish. You can learn more about this Sister here.
