Making a Difference - The Chi Omega Foundation

All in the Family

“My daughter, Carley, truly found her ‘home’ in the Alpha Beta Chapter of Chi Omega at Auburn U. There was a sense of belonging from the beginning of recruitment, throughout pledging, and now as an active member. The core values, diversity of the chapter, philanthropic focus, and opportunities to fellowship and grow were all aspects Carley found appealing in Chi Omega. Finding a Sisterhood of like-minded girls has been beneficial and helped the transition to college from out of state go smoothly.” —Beth Ratcliff Boone Phi Delta/Mississippi State U Madison, Mississippi

As each of our members reflects on her Chi Omega collegiate experience, her chapter members and alumnae advisors serve as her family while on campus.

That need for extended family during the collegiate days is tremendous in today’s world. In addition to the care and support provided by and between chapter members, our collegiate members learn the valued lesson of living in a community and being held accountable for their actions. This desire for support and being a part of a family of high achievers has yielded in 2012 a record collegiate population of more than 21,000 members.

An emerging trend is parents investing in Chi Omega through their support of the Chi Omega Foundation. Chi Omega parents gave enthusiastically to support our 2011 Annual Fund. So enthusiastically, indeed, that parent giving comprised 10% of last year’s total Annual Fund gifts. Most of the operating budget of the Fraternity comes directly from dues received from undergraduate members who are already challenged by the increasing costs of education. Contributions to the Foundation provide the margin of excellence to deliver the life-transforming leadership programs, resources, and tools of the Fraternity.

Mothers and fathers have seen their daughters flourish in Chi Omega. The membership experience we create enhances her education and develops her character beyond any lessons learned in a classroom, lecture hall, or laboratory. Over her lifetime, she will reference skills learned in the chapter, such as wise decision-making, building group consensus, and budgeting. Parents are impressed by the focus on leadership development and personal values for serving the greater world.

Many parents have especially remarked that they appreciate knowing their daughters and her Chi Omega peers will receive alcohol education every year, made possible by Foundation donors. To learn more about these efforts, visit risk management education at www.ChiOmega.com.

We thank all our Chi Omega parents for their partnership that enables us to offer outstanding programming specifically designed for the benefit of generations of Chi Omegas.

Daughter is Hillary Muss, G.T.B. of Nu/U of Wisconsin:

“I appreciate Chi Omega’s commitment to leadership development. While Hillary was growing up, our family lived in several places. With each move, Hillary sought leadership positions, even in ballet class! Hillary picked the U of Wisconsin for college, and I was a little nervous about the large campus. But I see happy women, lovely friends, and I hear Hillary’s confidence and interest in her community. She is safe and involved. She, again, is a leader. As chapter vice president, she is responsible for scholarship in the chapter.” —Joan Muss, Chi Omega Foundation donor Greensboro, North Carolina

“One of the proudest moments I have as scholarship advisor is writing the congratulations letter to each parent of a graduating Chi Omega and thanking them for their support of their daughter and in Chi Omega through her collegiate years. As an advisor, I see firsthand the benefits of newer programs that Chi Omega has implemented. The challenges of today’s world are being met headon and I am constantly amazed how much more prepared a Chi Omega is entering the workforce than her collegiate counterparts.” —Dr. Wynde Cheek Ford, Sigma Beta/ Montana State U. Wynde is the chapter’s scholarship advisor and alumnae relations advisor and a 2012 graduate of the Nancy Walton Laurie Leadership Institute of Chi Omega Flagship Session. She has been a multiple, consecutive-year contributor to the Chi Omega Foundation and an 1895 Society member. She is a Board Certified general neurologist.
