New Alumna Is an AIDS-HIV Volunteer in the Kingdom of Swaziland

Allie Bailey Hughey, a new Kappa Lambda/U of California–San Diego alumna, is a volunteer research assistant at the Baylor Clinical Centre of Excellence, a pediatric HIV clinic, in Mbabane, Swaziland, a southeast African kingdom roughly the size of New Jersey with about 1.1 million people and the highest HIV prevalence in the world.

“All my projects at the HIV clinic,” says Allie, “are focused on improving the quality of patient care and treatment at the clinic and in similar resource-limited settings in Africa.”

Allie additionally assists at two other HIV/AIDS organizations in Swaziland, works with a teen support club for HIV-positive youth, and mentors a group of Swazi teen girls. Says Allie, “I am very busy but the inspiration, confidence, and skills I have gained from my work make every minute worth it.”

Later this year, Allie will spend six months doing public health work in Brazil before starting a master’s program in public health next fall.
