Mission Trip to Haiti Was Life-Changing

I traveled to Haiti in December 2011 on a mission trip to work with an orphanage and churches in a small town named Leogane.

What an experience! To witness such poverty and adversity was life changing. I was overwhelmed the first few days because it was astonishing to see Haiti’s desolation for myself. I realized then how much I take for granted and how blessed I am.

These children gave me hope. I saw them sleeping in tents on the hard ground without pillows or blankets, and yet they are so joyful.

At the orphanage, I was feeding an 18-month-old girl who’d had only one meal the day before and it was now 10 a.m. She drank water for long periods of time, refusing to surrender the cup for fear that if she did not drink then, there might not be another chance to have water that day.

My Sisters were so encouraging as I prepared for this trip. Many helped me prepare crafts and supplies that we needed to work with the children and the chapter also gave me a care package before I left.

I returned to Leogane during spring break. It was wonderful to see the children again.
