By Patricia Loughry Cox, Iota/U of Texas–Austin

We Keep Our Potato Chips in the Refrigerator: A Memoir of an Alzheimer’s Victim

With a balance of humor and sadness, Patricia Cox has penned a touching memoir about her late husband, Fred Thompson, an Alzheimer’s victim, and her reflections on the day-by-day experiences as a caregiver to one in decline from the dread disease. She relates candid stories and incidents, including Fred’s arrest for shoplifting cereal from a supermarket to her realization that he was incapable of taking a shower by himself.

Through this book, caregivers, friends, and relatives of dementia sufferers can find a connection and realize they are not alone in their dire situations. Caring for or even knowing a victim of Alzheimer’s is not an easy path. Patricia’s stories make the unreal seem real, the impossible seem possible.

According to one reader of this book, “I laughed and cried. My mom had Alzheimer’s. Your story is so poignant, so true in ways too many to count. I thank you for putting into words what so many people go through . . . ”

Patricia is on the Alzheimer’s Association Speakers’ Bureau and is teaching memoir writing classes for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the U of Denver and The Academy for Lifelong Learning. Although she has had magazine articles published, We Keep Our Potato Chips in the Refrigerator is her first book.
