Rise to the Summitt One Step at a Time

Legendary U of Tennessee–Knoxville Lady Vols basketball coach Pat Head Summitt, Xi Zeta/U of Tennessee–Martin, built her award-winning program “one step at a time.” On Saturday evening, September 24, Pi Chapter/UT–Knoxville honored this Sister at the Rise to the Summitt Gala.

The event, held at the beautiful Cherokee Country Club, benefitted the building of the chapter’s home, in which the grand staircase is named Rise to the Summitt. It ascends from the dining room on the ground level to the great hall on the main floor, with each of the steps leading to the championship landing.

Pi House Corporation President Joyce Tapscott, Theta Gamma/Queens U, welcomed the Chi Omegas, their spouses, and guests. “This evening is dedicated to you, Pat. May you enjoy the evening as we Rise to the Summitt together!”

The Reverend Eleanor Lynch Ellsworth, Pi, an Episcopal priest from La Jolla, California, gave the blessing.

S.T.B. Joellyn Sullivan paid tribute to Coach Summitt as a role model for leadership, dedication, and determination—the strong characteristics that exemplify her life. In 1988 Coach Summitt received the prestigious Malinda Jolley Mortin Woman of Achievement Award of Chi Omega. At that time Pat had won her second national championship. Since then she has won six additional national championships and won more basketball games (1071) than any other coach. “Pat has made a difference in the lives of so many, on and off the court. Chi Omega continues to celebrate Pat today as a Woman of Achievement. “

Following a video tribute to Coach Summitt, Betsy Snyder Roberts, Pi, honorary chair of the Chi Omega Capital Campaign, introduced Coach Summitt, who pointed out the important role Chi Omega has played in her life. “Chi Omega has taught me so many valuable lessons over the years: the value of friendships, the value of team, the value of tradition. I can’t tell you how much I am touched by your naming the grand staircase the Rise to the Summitt. May these steps be symbolic of the path to pride and loyalty as a Chi Omega.”

Capital Campaign Co-Chair Ellen “Sis” Roddy Mitchell, Pi, concluded the evening with words of appreciation to Coach Summitt. “Thank you, Pat, for who you are. You challenged Chi Omega to build a house and we are meeting that challenge. You bring out the best in the Lady Vols, in Chi Omega, and in everyone whose life you touch.”
